Frugal Green "Shampoo" and "Conditioner"

by Shirley
(Hermanus, South Africa)

In December 2009, we stopped using store-bought shampoo and conditioner and switched to a healthier, cheaper and enviro-friendly alternative:

Shampoo:
Mix one part bicarbonate of soda with 3 parts water in a large squeeze bottle. Apply generously and rub through hair and scalp for a few seconds, then rinse well.
(The bicarb feels like sand in your hair sometimes!)

Conditioner:
Mix one part vinegar with 4 parts water. Add a teaspoon vanilla essence for flavour if you like.
Apply to hair and finger it through. Rinse or leave in. The smell of vinegar disappears as your hair dries.
This conditions and detangles even long hair.
