Saving water

These are just a few tips that make a little difference.

1. Use your bathwater to water the garden – think carefully about what soap you use. Can you make a connection to the drainpipe that you can switch when needed? Much better of course – have a shower.

2. Water you have used to steam/boil is wonderful for your plants. I remember once reading a lovely story about a woman who used to water a peach tree outside her house with the vegetable water – it looked magnificent with the branches heavy with fruit. When she died the tree stopped thriving and bearing fruit.

3. Use a glass when brushing your teeth.

4. Use a washing-up bowl, don’t let the water run. I love this tip: let the washing-up pile up if there is only one or two of you. Think about what soap you are using, because the water can be used on the garden, or even over your car (if either aren’t too greasy)

5. Have washing-up water at the ready, when you are cooking. Stuff that gets caked on takes more effort (water) to clean.

6. Now …. a tricky one to share – I have no vegetable plot, but I once read that urine is a good fertiliser! No liters of water to flush wasted.

7. Don’t forget to install a water-butt to collect rainwater.

I am wondering if you haven’t already mentioned all this on your absolutely brilliant site, Wendy! I will come back to explore more.

Thank you for these great tips. The glass with teeth brushing is a good idea. My grandma also used to collect urine to use for her plants and I remember her garden always being lovely :-)
