Planning A Vegetable Garden

When planning a vegetable garden you have a series of decisions to make. This article will guide you through those decisions and help you get on your way to being a successful home vegetable garden expert!

home vegetable gardenThere are many ways to plan your home vegetable garden and it can become confusing when trying to decide between a raised bed vegetable garden or an organic vegetable garden or even a square foot vegetable garden.

But let’s go back to the beginning so that you can work through this process of planning your vegetable garden successfully.

# 1 – Space

This is your major determining factor when planning a vegetable garden. This will determine if you have 10 beds or 2 or whether you will do raised beds, square foot gardening or just plant a potted vegetable garden.

We didn’t have space due to lawn and flower beds so we decided to get rid of our flower beds in two sections of our yard and plant vegetables instead!

#2 – Sunlight

Your next big factor is sunlight. Vegetables need long morning sun, but can handle all day sun too if well watered. They will not grow in the shade so you need to make sure that you are going to establish your vegetable garden in a sunny spot.

#3 – Time

The next thing to consider is how much time you will have to devote to your vegetable garden. If you work full time, and don’t have a green job like me that keeps me home, you will have less time to spend on your garden.

You will also want to possibly phase in your vegetable garden plans so that you do not start off with more than you can handle. Our first vegetable garden was a structured raised bed vegetable garden and 6 months later we established a second rambling section where we have plans for a more vertical approach to growing veggies.

#4 – Cost

raised vegetable gardenThe last thing to consider when planning a vegetable garden is the cost. Certain ways of growing vegetables are cheaper than others. If you plant vegetables in your flower beds you will really only have to pay for the seedlings and compost.

If you decide to go with a potted vegetable garden you will have the costs of the pots as well as potting soil.

And then the most expensive types of vegetable gardens are where you need to buy timber for your raised beds or square foot boxes.
