Teaching Kids To Be Green

You taught your children how to talk, helped them when learning how to walk…have you ever thought about teaching kids to be green?

As with all matters when it comes to parenting, you cannot teach – or pass on to – your children what you do not have or live yourself.

Therefore the first thing that has to happen when you want to teach your children about living a simple, frugal green lifestyle is: “Do I, the parent, live this way?”

If you answer “no” to that question then the first thing to do is to sign up for my free green living ecourse which will get you started on the right path.

After you have signed up, or if you think you live a pretty green lifestyle the next thing you need to do is to draw your children alongside you in your green choices.

recycle For example if you recycle, get your children involved in sorting and delivering the items to the centre.

If you cook from scratch, be sure to create a “kitchen ethic” and get your kids involved in the kitchen helping you in meal preparation.

Every green family has a vegetable garden of some sorts, even if it is only a container vegetable garden. Make sure that you get your children involved in this pursuit by setting aside one morning or evening a week when they have to work with you in the vegetable garden.

Another way to go about teaching kids to be green is to teach them how to make your green cleaners. Our 8 year old has a chore each month of making our laundry soap and after showing him how to do it a couple of times, he manages quite well on his own with just my supervision.

If your children are in school, see if you can implement a green living lesson plan for them or get their school signed up for the eco-schools project.
