Define Your Simple Lifestyle

Living green is not always the simple lifestyle that you picture. You need more time to live green as there are many more things you need to plan for and do. However in these added responsibilities you can find a peace and enjoyment that you would not have if you continue to follow a fast paced 21st century lifestyle.

The first thing you need to determine is what area of your lifestyle you need to attend to first. Are you rushing around from job to school to shops to friends and never quite feeling like you are keeping up with the pace of your life?

Maybe you are finding that you are feeding yourself and your family on fast foods and premade dinners and want to make a change here.

Perhaps your issue is that you want to grow your own vegetables but don’t know where to start or how to find the time.

Or maybe you just want to learn how to be green?

All of these have a similar starting point – choose to slow the pace of your life by paring back on the things that are not necessary.

This may include:

~Saying no to friends when they invite you out
~Saying no to children and their constant stream of activities
~Finding a green job or working towards becoming self employed
~Cutting back on the spending cycle
~Clearing your weekends so that you have time to learn new skills

It is not always easy to make a transition from busy days to a simple lifestyle. Often the paring back is like kicking an entrenched habit and it hurts when you do it. But our bodies know when overload is striking and will begin to send out warning signals.

These may be:

simple lifestyle ~Insomnia
~Recurring health issues
~Outbursts of anger
~Panic attacks
~Inexplicable tiredness

Once we begin to realize that a change has to happen it makes it easier to start making positive changes to our lives.

The transition for me happened by simply putting aside one day on the weekend where I do not go out nor do I plan anything, not for myself or my children. We simply stay home.

The next step for me was to cut out any superfluous activities that either my children or I were involved in.

Now I was starting to find that our evenings were not as rushed as before and I had time. This time was used for cooking good wholesome meals from scratch. We also chose to keep our family meal times as “sacred” in that we try to never arrange anything over dinnertime. This is a wonderful addition to our simple lifestyle as we can truly connect with one another.

Soon thereafter we felt that we wanted to grow our own vegetables as a way of drawing our whole family in to a project. This has become an immense source of pleasure for us as we watch the fruit of our labours.

So if you are feeling the pressure of 21st century living – fast lives, fast jobs, fast food – then take a good hard look at everything that takes your time and start to par back until you find space to breath. Then begin to add simple endeavours to your lifestyle. I promise - the benefits are huge!
