How To Grow Cilantro

In my home vegetable garden it was important for me to learn how to grow cilantro, or coriander as we call it here, because I like to eat it with almost everything. Here are some tips and how to for growing cilantro

how to grow cilantro Cilantro or coriander (or sometimes called Dhania) is really easy to grow but tends to bolt in hot weather. It can survive the heat if you plant it in semishade and keep it well watered.

It is a favourite with Indian, Mexican and Thai foods and as we eat a lot of these I always have a patch growing. If you can find cilantro seeds on a tape make sure to buy them up as the spacing is perfect and the yield good.

How to grow cilantro - planting

Sow seeds in seed trays and then plant out into freshly dug over, composted soil. Follow the general rules for growing herbs

Long term care & harvesting

If you want to eat it as a green herb then cut and pick as you need. If you want to save seeds then allow it to go to seed and collect when the seed heads are ready.

When to plant: Sow seed Summer to Autumn. Plant out seedlings as ready.

How many plants: 6 plants.

How long to harvest: 5 weeks

Successive planting: Every 4 - 6 weeks



CILANTRO/CORIANDER USES

This herb can be used green in Mexican meals or with Thai food. We also use it as a garnish for Indian Curries. Use it green in tortillas and salsa and chilli

The dried seeds can be stored in an airtight container and ground up and added to recipes as a seasoning.
