Home Vegetable Garden
growing vegetables in your garden

While it is nice to have a dedicated home vegetable garden, you can also plant vegetables directly into your flower borders and let their foliage be part of your landscaping.

home vegetable garden If you have a garden that is in full sun your vegetables will grow really well amongst your flowers.

As always there are a few vegetable growing basics that you need to understand:

  • Most vegetables need full morning sun for more than half the day

  • Most vegetables thrive in well composted well drained soil
  • Steps to take when planting your home vegetable garden in your flower borders:

    1. Start buy purchasing a truck load of compost if you can and dress all your beds.
    2. Gently turn this in to the beds without disturbing your existing plants.
    3. You will need to grow plants that are already seedlings and not from seed.
    4. When making your hole to plant into with a hand fork, water the hole first, then plant.

Best vegetables to plant in your flower beds:

~Tall foliage like spinach and Swiss chard. There are “bright light” spinach which have gorgeous brightly coloured stems (orange, yellow and red) which can add further colour to your flower beds.

    ~Leeks

    ~Lettuces (watch out for snails)

~Kale and cabbages. These need more space due to the head formation.

~Tomatoes which will need to be staked.

    ~Fruit trees

    ~Broccoli and cauliflower

~If you have a sunny wall you can put a trellis against it and grow cucumbers, beans or peas.

~Berries can grow against a fence. We have had great success with the Cape Gooseberry, even in pots.

Remember that your home vegetable garden is just like an ordinary vegetable patch and you need to rotate your vegetables and do not grow them over again and again in the same pot and soil. Also remember to add more compost and liquid feed after you have harvested a heavy feeder type plant.
