Learning how to make baked beans means that you are able to enjoy a high protein meal without the additives commercially made beans have. You also have less waste and a much friendlier product for your family.

You will need:
2 ½ cups haricot beans
2 roughly chopped onions
3 cloves crushed garlic
2 tablespoons olive oil
5 peeled chopped tomatoes
1 tablespoon tomato puree
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon dark soya sauce
1 teaspoon marjoram, thyme and basil
Black pepper and salt
3 cups of water

Soak your beans overnight. Then cook in the water for about 1 hour until the beans are soft. In the meantime bake the onions and garlic at 160 deg Celsius for 30 minutes. Combine the onions and garlic with all the other ingredients and run through a blender until smooth.

Drain the beans and add to the roasting tray you used for the onions and garlic. Pour the blended ingredients over the beans and bake uncovered for 60 – 90 minutes stirring every now and again.

If the mixture seems a little thick, add a little water. Serve with crusty bread or with nachos or simply on toast!
