GROW YOUR OWN SUPER ORGANIC PINEAPPLES

First smooth pineapple in the world?

First smooth pineapple in the world?

First smooth pineapple in the world? Huge - double in size pineapple DNA Pineapple. Biggest top plant - my smooth pineapple

I have grown many organic pineapples from small bought Queens pineapples that taste sweet. Just cut about a centimetre of "flesh" off under the pineapple top leafy part. Place this cut side down on dry soil for a few days/a week to dry out a bit. Dig a shallow hole and push this pineapple top slightly inside this hole and cover just the base with soil. Water well, and watch it grow very soon into a pineapple plant. In about a year to 18 months you will start picking one pineapple fruit of your pineapple plant every six months or so.

About eighteen months ago I did exactly the same as above, but did another experiment by placing my DNA inside the cut off section before planting following the above instructions. I was very surprised after a year later, to see a huge pineapple developed on the one side and lately another one on the top end with a third starting to develop on another side too! The strange part is that my DNA made the world's first? smooth and long strappy leaves, double the size in height, pineapple plant. The one day the pineapple was still green, the next day being a sunny day, it turned yellow and I harvested it the following day before any insects/pests could cause any damage to it.
Lo, and behold, the pineapple was smooth with bigger segments on the outside, beautiful and sweet tasting inside and the core just as sweet and softer than the normal hard core usually found inside a pineapple.

So this specially DNA-adapted pineapple after eating it, had it's top planted out and the baby developed into a plant within a month, and now is much bigger, still smoothed all over like this one, and ready to start producing pineapples too!
See last photo where this one's top being planted out inside a 80 litre tub with the normal small Queen pineapple tops next to it.

I think we should call this pineapple species after me due to the fact that it contains my DNA inside it now:
pineapple-natalensis or something likewise perhaps?

From now on, PLEASE do not discard you pineapple tops to the landfill site, but plant it rather and enjoy year round fresh and sweet tasting organic pineapples!

Jhburg enquiry
by: Natalie Rowles

Dear Ano.
Thanks for your comment. Many years ago a farmer bought a few Queen's pineapples in Grahamstown and planted it out in Bathhurst. These are the same ones - the smaller species than the larger ones.
A person just has to keep on experimenting and see if it will grow there in Jhb. as well. You probably have to cover it with "fleece" against frost but I cannot see why not. Just grow it in a sunny position if you can, water it frequently and follow my guidelines, and pray!
My DNA is a bit of a secret which I would like to keep for a while - but think where can a person obtain your own DNA easily? Try it and see if you can achieve the same results. When visiting Durban, come and see for yourself the differences between non-DNA and with my DNA pineapples - quite amazing! Hope to start something here in KZN re the above pineapples to create jobs for our youth!

"My DNA"
by: Anonymous

WOW!!! It never crossed my mind how pineapples are actually grown. Thank you for writing the article. I am amazed at how much I am yet to discover about growing food. Please clarify something, what do you mean by "my DNA"? How was it incorporated in your pineapple planting experience.

If you live in Jo'burg, is the climate still right for growing pineapples as this is a tropical fruit?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Shirley

Yes, it's a pity - would have loved to show you my pineapple beds - all done likewise and 100% success rate even with the most miserable and smallest pineapple tops. Once planted, water for a few weeks and only then now and then - rainfall basically here in Pinetown is enough to keep it growing.
My DNA pineapple plant started producing a second pineapple a week or two after one of my non-DNA's started fruiting too - guess what, my DNA is now twice the size of the non-DNA, more pinker shine to the whole pineapple than the normal greyer look of the non-DNA queen's small pineapple. Even the leaves and fruit has retained the smooth effect as well. Both are planted in the same old 100% vermi-soil bed - and hardly received tap water throughout the year.

Organic Pineapples
by: Shirley

My kids have been asking me how pineapples are grown as we eat two a day for breakfast in our smoothies, and to be honest, I wasn't all that sure how and where on the plant the fruit forms!

My parents have planted pineapple tops without much luck, so I will show them and my kids your tips and see if we can get it right.

We would love to try the new smoother species! Pity we are on the other side of the country
