When you grow potatoes in this way you need to change your expectations from the whoppers that you get in shops to baby or new potatoes.
But the bonus is that these potatoes are full of flavour and are crisp and crunchy under the knife.
Growing potatoes in this way is ideal for container vegetable gardens where you do not have a lot of space.
Start by placing your tyre on a hard surface in a full sun position or where they will get at least 6 hours of sun per day. Fill the tyre with good potting soil. Place two sprouted seed potatoes on the soil.
Now cover the spuds with soil.
When the potatoes have sent up stems and leaves about 20 cm above the height of the tyre, place another tyre over the first and gently fill around the stems with more soil until just the leaves are sticking out.
You could probably add another 2 tyres at the most in this method before your potatoes begin to flower or go yellow. Leave them to die back completely so that the stems are all shrivelled and brown. Then you can lift the tyres off and scrape away the soil, finding lots of golf ball sized potatoes.
A simple and rewarding way how to grow potatoes in tyres in your home vegetable garden. We have also found that growing sweet potatoes offers huge rewards.
